Toronto Maple Leafs fan favorite from the 60’s Eddie Shack passed away over the weekend at the age of 83. ‘The Entertainer’, as he was known, died Saturday following a battle with throat cancer.
Over his career he was a three time all star and won four Stanley Cups with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Shack is perhaps best remembered by one photo in particular…..when he jumped on the back of former Maple Leafs teammate Gerry Ehman!
Robert Shaver, was the Buffalo Sabres team photographer, who captured the moment in a game played between the Buffalo Sabres and the California Seals in the early 1970’s at the old War Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo.
Paul Weiland, Sabres PR and Communications Director at the time, commented on the classic photograph.
“His iconic shot of Eddie Shack climbing Gerry Ehman’s back may be the best single image ever shot of NHL play.”
